Name All the Hawaiian Islands

I would like to name all the Hawaiian islands.

When looking at the map of Hawaii, from left to right, you’ll find the oldest of the 8 main islands; Niihau. If you continue on west beyond Niihau, there lie a 100+ islets and atolls known as the sandwich isles, which are also known to be part of the Hawaiian chain.

The island that comes next as you go east from Niihau, is Kauai, followed by Oahu, then Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and the youngest of them all, the Big Island.

I hope that my personal knowledge about the islands will help you make an informed decision on your next trip and help you in your quest to choose which island you should visit first.

Map of Hawaii

So, you're visiting Hawaii and you have just 5 days to do and see everything while you're here. I have my personal likes and dislikes about each island and I will share them with you. Then decide, on your own, which island will suite your vacation expectations.

Each island has a West and an east end. The typical topography of the islands are dry and hot on the west, south west part of the island and cool, lush and green on the north, north east parts of the island.

When you hear the weather man say that the winds are coming from the "Mauka" side of the island, that means winds are coming from the the mountain slopes, also known as tradewinds. If tradewinds are here, it means cooler breezes.

However, if you hear the weather man say that winds are coming from "makai" or ocean winds, we also call this “kona winds”, we know that the air will be muggy and hot. It may also mean that there will be no winds, a still day, even hotter and muggier, a great day to spend at the pool or at the beach. But then, again, everyday in Hawaii is great for surf, sand and beach.

For an in depth, more scientific approach to the geology of the islands click on the link below. This will help you to get a better understanding about the formation of the Hawaiian islands.

Formation of the Hawaiian Islands

When viewing the map of hawaii, we often neglect to see that little island to the west of Kauai, Niihau. It is the oldest of the 8 main islands and is part of Kauai County. A secluded, untouched part of Hawaii that most people never hear about. I have never visited that island myself. My understanding about the island is that you cannot visit unless you are invited. It is where the last "100% pure" blooded Hawaiians live.

If you get a chance to visit, consider yourself a lucky person. Click on the names of the islands below and get more information about the islands. Hope you enjoy your local guide through hawaii.
