Simple Directions on How to Make Laulau
I will show you how to make laulau for your own backyard luau. It's simple if you need to make less than 25 but if you are having a large party I suggest you enlist the help of all your friends and family if they would like to eat this 'ono traditional Hawaiian dish.
Ingredients to Make Laulau
1) Luau leaves also known as taro leaves.
2) Hawaiian salt (the main seasoning)
3) Chopped up pork (1" cubes)
It is best to use pork butt, it has lots of fat on it and will keep your laulau from getting dry.
4) Optional: Chopped up fat pieces (1/2" cubes)
5) Chopped Salmon or butter fish (1/4" sizes)
6) Ti-leaves (deboned)
Prepare the Laulau
1) Season your pork with the Hawaiian salt.
2) Wrap 3 pieces of pork, a piece of butterfish or salmon with 1 large luau leaf or 2 to 3 small pieces of luau leaves.
3) Form into somewhat of a ball and place this ball onto a deboned ti-leaf and begin to wrap the ti-leaf around the ball of ingredients.
4) Tie the ball of ingredients with the ends of the ti-leaf.
